The request was simple enough. Power in the backyard, out by the play area, without an extension cord snaking across the grass every weekend.

What makes a job like this worth photographing is not the outlet. It is the distance between the outlet and the house. Running a branch circuit outside means leaving the dry, protected world of interior wiring and putting conductors into Florida sand, under a garden border, and through a wall penetration that has to stay sealed against wind driven rain for the next twenty years. Mount Dora sits up on the Lake County ridge, so the soil here drains better than most of Central Florida. Drainage is not the same as dry. A trench that looks bone dry in April is holding water in August, and everything below grade gets specified for the August version. This is ordinary residential electrical work, and it is the kind that either lasts two decades or fails in two rainy seasons.

Why not just run an extension cord to the backyard?

Because the code does not accept a cord as permanent wiring, and neither does the mower.

Extension cords are not a substitute for fixed wiring. They get run over by mowers, they sit in wet grass for a week at a time, and they end up feeding loads nobody sized them for. The photo here shows the finished end of the alternative: a weatherproof box on a short post, set right at the edge of the pea gravel where the picnic table sits.

That location was not an accident. It is out of the mower path, above the level where sprinkler spray lands, and close enough to the play area that nobody is tempted to reach for a cord anyway. Placement is most of the value in outdoor outlet and switch installation. Get it wrong by ten feet and the homeowner still runs a cord, which means you spent a day of trenching to change nothing. We set the post and dry fit the box before the trench got backfilled, so the stub and the enclosure lined up without putting any strain on the connection.

How deep does an outdoor circuit have to be buried?

Deeper than most homeowners expect. Under a residential yard the National Electrical Code burial table puts direct buried cable and PVC conduit at eighteen inches of cover, with rigid metal conduit allowed considerably shallower.

The photo at the house wall shows where the run starts. Conduit comes down the siding from the box, sweeps at the bottom, and the trench line heads out across the bed toward the yard. Backfilled and raked, it already looks like nothing happened there.

The scalloped concrete edging in that shot is the part that costs time. You lift those pieces, keep them in order, trench under the bed, then reset them. Trenching straight through is faster and it leaves a scar the homeowner looks at every single day. The real hazard in a Central Florida yard is not the depth anyway. It is the irrigation. Poly lateral lines sit at six to twelve inches and they run in directions nobody can predict from the surface, so the first pass near the house and near any visible head gets hand dug. If a property already has buried circuits of unknown vintage, an electrical inspection is the cheapest way to find out what is down there before a shovel does.

What makes an outdoor outlet weatherproof in Florida?

Ground fault protection, a cover rated to stay closed while a cord is plugged into it, and an enclosure that drains instead of collecting water.

The bubble style cover on the house wall is the while in use type. The older flip lid version only protects the receptacle when nothing is plugged in, which is precisely when protection does not matter. Plug a cord in and a flip lid props open, and the rain goes straight down into the device. Ground fault protection is not optional for outdoor receptacles at a dwelling, and it can live either at the device or back at the breaker.

The second photo shows both enclosures out at the post: the receptacle in its in use cover, and a weatherproof box beside it, mounted to a board and staked so the whole assembly stays plumb in loose soil. Look for the green bonding screw on the cover. Real things get plugged in outdoors now, from pool robots to holiday light controllers, and whole home surge protection covers those circuits from the panel side.
