Almost everything electrical in this house lives outside, and in Florida that is a decision with consequences.
The service wall carries the meter, the main panel, the irrigation controller and a handful of conduits heading into the ground, all of it on stucco under a modest overhang. It works. It also spends every day of its life in high humidity, afternoon thunderstorms and direct afternoon sun, and outdoor equipment ages differently than the same gear sitting in a garage. The failures show up in predictable places once you know where to look. This homeowner also has a pool, a paver patio and stacked stone columns with lanterns on them, so the outdoor circuits are not an afterthought here. They are most of the house's electrical life. Anyone hiring an electrician in Longwood for a property set up like this should be having the service wall looked at once a year rather than once a decade.
When the enclosure has stopped protecting what is inside it, or when the wiring in it was never arranged so anyone could work on it safely.
The open panel in the photo tells that story clearly. It is a Siemens load center with a 150 amp main at the top and a second 150 amp breaker below it, branch breakers in between, and heavy feeders looping across the middle of the interior. Now look at the bottom of the can. Debris and rust collecting in the pan is what happens when a door gasket dries out or a knockout was left unsealed years ago.
None of that is dramatic by itself. It is cumulative. Moisture sitting in the pan finds the neutral bar first, and a corroded neutral termination is the actual cause behind a lot of what homeowners describe as flickering lights. The arrangement is the second problem. Feeders crossing diagonally make every future circuit harder and put conductors exactly where a dead front screw wants to land. A panel in this condition can often be rewired in place: pull the interior apart, redress and reroute the conductors, retorque every termination to spec, replace the gasket and seal the entries. When the can itself is compromised it becomes an electrical panel upgrade instead. Telling those two apart takes an electrical inspection, not a guess from the driveway.
Bonding first, then the disconnect, then ground fault protection. In that order, because the bonding is the part that keeps people alive.
The photo shows the equipment pad. Pool heat pump on the left, circulation pump and cartridge filter to the right, two small enclosures on the stucco above with PVC dropping into them. Equipment bonding is the piece homeowners never see and the piece an inspector looks at first. Every metal part associated with the circulating system gets tied into a common bond with solid copper so that nothing can sit at a different potential than anything else a swimmer can touch.
The disconnecting means comes next. A pool pump motor needs a disconnect that is within sight of the equipment and set back a minimum distance from the inside wall of the pool, and that clearance is worth confirming against the code edition your county has adopted. Ground fault protection for pool pump motors is required, and a 240 volt heat pump has requirements of its own. Then there is the practical Florida detail. Everything on that pad sits in river rock, which drains beautifully and hides nothing, so conduit stubs come up out of the stone in plain view and the sweep and strap have to be right or the first pressure washing finds them. We terminate into pad enclosures from below wherever the layout allows. Water finds a top entry every single time. This is one of the areas where residential electrical services and pool contracting overlap, so scope gets agreed in writing before anyone digs.
A trench you only dig once, empty sleeves under anything you do not want to cut twice, and an early decision about line voltage versus low voltage.
Each of those stacked stone columns carries a post top lantern. A column like that is hollow enough to bring a feed up through the center, which is the clean way to do it, and it is only clean if the sleeve went in while the column was being built. Retrofitting one that is already stacked and capped means coring it or running conduit up the outside, and nobody is happy with the second option.
The mushroom style path light in the rock bed is low voltage on its own transformer. Mixing the two systems is normal and it is usually the right call. Line voltage goes to fixtures that need real output and sit on permanent structures. Low voltage goes to the ones that will move as the landscaping matures. The part that matters six months later is the sleeving. Before pavers go down we put empty conduit under every crossing, cap both ends and note where they are. It costs almost nothing during construction and it is the entire difference between adding a light later and cutting up a finished patio.
