A water heater circuit is one of the simplest things an electrician installs. It is also one of the easiest to get quietly wrong.

This one is in Casselberry, a few minutes from our shop on Seminola Boulevard. The scope was the electrical side only: size the circuit off the appliance nameplate, get a two pole breaker into the load center, and run a protected whip down the closet wall to where the tank connects. None of that is complicated. All of it is specific. Put the breaker one size off, support the whip badly, or make the final connection somewhere other than a box, and you have built a problem that surfaces years later as heat at a termination. Anyone hiring an electrician in Casselberry for water heater work should expect the nameplate to be read before anything gets ordered.

What size circuit does an electric water heater need?

For a standard residential tank, a 30 amp two pole breaker on 10 AWG copper. The arithmetic is not close enough to argue about.

A common 4500 watt element at 240 volts draws 18.75 amps. A storage water heater counts as a continuous load, so the circuit gets sized at 125 percent of that, which lands at 23.4 amps. The next standard breaker up is 30. Ten gauge copper carries it comfortably. Where installers get into trouble is assuming every tank is 4500 watts, which is why the nameplate gets read first and the parts get ordered second.

In the photo the new breaker is seated in the Square D: two pole, 30 amps, with a 10 kA interrupting rating stamped on the case and the factory instruction label still wrapped around it. It goes in switched off and stays off until there is an appliance on the other end worth energizing. Those yellow boots over the main lugs are factory insulating covers. One detail worth noticing is the older two pole 30 already sitting beside it. Before adding a second one, somebody should know what the first actually feeds, because that changes the load calculation on the whole panel. When nobody can answer that question, an electrical inspection settles it in an afternoon.

How does the circuit get from the panel to the tank?

Through a whip that stays supported the whole way down and lands in a box at the appliance rather than in open air.

The gray flexible metal conduit in these photos is the whip. It comes down the closet wall, gets held with a one hole strap partway so the connector is not carrying the weight of the run, and turns at an elbow near the tank. Small things decide whether this passes inspection and whether it lasts twenty years: the strap, the bend radius, a proper connector at each end, and an equipment ground that is genuinely bonded rather than merely present.

In the wider photo the three conductors are individually capped and the circuit is dead. That is what a rough in looks like before the appliance is set. The final connection gets made up inside a box at the tank, never out in open air, and the breaker is the last thing switched on. The closet itself is tight, which is normal for this vintage of house. Getting a whip down a wall that already carries a cold water flex, a three quarter inch ball valve and a flue takes a minute of planning about who occupies what space. Sequence matters more than people expect. Electrical goes in while the wall is still reachable, because working that corner around a full forty gallon tank is not realistic. Coordinating that order is a routine part of residential electrical service on appliance work.

Will your panel take another 240 volt circuit?

Only if it has two adjacent full spaces on opposite phases, and a tandem breaker will not substitute for them.

That is the constraint homeowners trip over. A panel can look half empty and still have nowhere to put a two pole breaker, because the free spaces are scattered rather than paired. Tandems double up two 120 volt circuits inside a single space, which is useful right up until you need 240 volts, and a panel already stuffed with them usually has no room left for work like this.

Service size is the second question. A house on 100 amps with a crowded panel is a different conversation from one on 200 amps with spaces to spare, and sometimes the honest answer is that the circuit is the cheap part and the panel is not. When there is genuinely no room, water heater work turns into an electrical panel upgrade. That is a much better thing to learn in week one than on install day with a tank sitting in the driveway.

One more worth counting now rather than later. If an EV charger installation is anywhere in the next few years, that is another two spaces and another large continuous load competing for the same bus. A heat pump or an electric range does the same thing. Reserving that capacity costs nothing while the dead front is already off.
